Green Jade and Its Common Gemstone Substitutes

Green jade is too broad a label for a careful material purchase. Ask which jade material is intended, whether its identity has been checked and what treatment is known. A green pebble may be a useful decorative object while still being incorrectly named. This distinction matters especially in a labelled reference collection.

Ask which jade

Nephrite and jadeite are familiar jade materials; specialist terminology also addresses some omphacite material. A supplier should give a precise identity rather than rely on a colour or a grade label. For a modest tumble collection, verified green nephrite is a clear, practical specification. Do not describe it as jadeite or borrow the price expectations of a different jade material.

Recognise the substitution problem

Serpentine, aventurine and other green materials can be sold with jade-like trade names. Their green colour does not make them jade. A name such as new jade needs explanation rather than automatic acceptance. Ask for the actual mineral or rock identity on the invoice and the basis of the identification. Visual resemblance and a cold touch are inadequate proof.

Discuss treatment separately

Jade products may have colour or structural treatments, including dyeing and impregnation. Identity alone does not establish an untreated condition. Avoid simplifying a complex description into a quality letter unless the seller explains exactly what the letter means for that material. Where a valuable jade claim affects the price, seek item-specific gemological evidence instead of attempting scratch or solvent experiments.

Keep the final offer accurate

A proposed green nephrite catalogue entry should stay unpublished until that stock has been verified. If the supplier can only support serpentine, rename the product and update its cards, photographs and care notes before offering it. Protect any known treatment from heat and chemicals and store the pebble clean and padded. A precise modest claim is easier to maintain than a prestigious unsupported one.
