Citrine and Smoky Quartz: Appearance and Treatment Differences

Citrine and smoky quartz can both show warm brown tones, but the names describe different quartz colour varieties. A careful comparison separates visible colour from the processes that may have produced or altered it. The buyer needs an accurate disclosure, not a confident diagnosis based on a single image.

Compare colour in neutral light

Citrine ranges through yellow and brownish orange; smoky quartz is commonly grey-brown to darker brown. Thickness, background and camera processing can shift the impression. A pale edge does not prove natural colour, and strong orange does not by itself prove heating. When assessing a tumble, compare several views of the actual batch and ask whether the photograph has been adjusted to exaggerate saturation.

Ask specifically about citrine

Heat-treated quartz is encountered in the citrine market. A seller should state what is known about the colour rather than treating the word genuine as an untreated guarantee. If the desired offer is natural-colour citrine, that claim requires evidence suited to the batch. A less expensive heat-treated specimen can still be an honestly described decorative product; it should not be substituted silently for a promised untreated item.

Ask separately about smoky quartz

Smoky colour may be natural or enhanced through irradiation. The quartz identity and the source of its colour are separate parts of the description. Do not infer mine origin, irradiation history or relative rarity from darkness alone. A reference kit can retain a smoky sample with treatment recorded as unknown, provided that the qualification is visible and is not converted into an unsupported natural-colour claim.

Choose the right record

A useful card contains the material name, batch reference, visible colour and the wording of the treatment statement. Keep actual weight and dimensions separate from mineral reference data. For display, choose the colour you enjoy and care for it gently away from strong heat. For an expensive untreated or origin-specific purchase, seek better evidence before paying for the claim rather than trying destructive home tests afterward.
