Silky white fibres create a pearly reflection across the carved form. One carved pyramid.

Both selenite and satin spar are names associated with gypsum varieties, but common retail satin spar has a fibrous, silky white appearance. Transparent plate-like selenite looks different. The catalogue should describe a fibrous white carving as satin spar gypsum when that is what has been identified, while explaining the familiar selenite trade usage.

Choosing this material or design

Gypsum is soft enough that careless handling and gritty wiping can mark it. Fibrous material can also split or chip along its structure. Inspect the apex and lower edges without pressing or testing them with a fingernail. A slight silky texture is different from loose fibres, a broken corner or damage concealed by the lighting.

Care before display

Keep gypsum away from soaking, wet ritual cleaning and damp storage. Use a very soft dry brush or cloth with little pressure. Store in its own padded compartment and protect it from harder stones. A dry shelf away from spills is more suitable than a kitchen counter, bathroom or plant tray.

Buying questions

Is satin spar clear quartz? No. Does the retail word selenite guarantee a transparent gypsum variety? No. Should a pyramid be washed to cleanse it? Dry care is the conservative choice for this soft material. Ask for the precise variety and actual construction before choosing a care method.
