Natural, Treated and Synthetic Gemstones: Questions Before Buying

Identification, treatment and geographic origin are separate questions. A document or listing should be read for the statements it actually makes. Do not assume that the word natural answers every treatment question, or that a country in a product name represents a laboratory-established origin.

Ask what the offered material is

Start with the stated gemstone variety and whether its identification has been established for the item. If a term such as natural, laboratory-created, composite or imitation is used, ask what evidence supports that description. A general trade name or colour description alone does not settle these questions.

Match the product code, photographs, measurements and report. A genuine report for a different stone cannot support the offer you are considering. Use our document comparison checklist to keep the records together.

Read treatment statements separately

Ask whether the report addresses treatments, which procedures it covers and what its stated limitations are. A missing treatment statement should not be converted into an untreated claim. Care and repair decisions may depend on these findings, so clarify them before mounting or using a cleaning method.

Separate sourcing and geographic-origin findings

A seller may describe where an item was sourced or its reported trade origin. A separately commissioned laboratory investigation can address geographic origin within its own scope and limitations. Ask which type of statement you are being given. If a country label is essential to your decision, request the relevant item-specific evidence.

A photograph, price or an identification certificate does not automatically establish geographic origin. Avoid comparing country labels as if every stone from a place has the same quality, treatment or appearance.
