Fluorite, Malachite and Other Delicate Tumbled Minerals

Some of the most attractive polished minerals need the gentlest care. Fluorite and malachite are noticeably softer than quartz, and their colour does not protect them from abrasion or breakage. Buy them for an appropriate display and packaging arrangement rather than assuming that every smooth pebble can share a loose pocket.

Fluorite and cleavage

Fluorite has a reference Mohs hardness of 4 and pronounced cleavage. A polished pebble can show green, purple or other zones, but an impact may expose a fresh flat break. Keep it in a padded cell with no pressure from a lid or a larger stone. Do not demonstrate its softness by deliberately scratching a finished specimen; use reference information and non-destructive observation.

Malachite and surface care

Malachite is a copper carbonate hydroxide, typically green and often banded. Its reference hardness is about 3.5–4. An intact polished piece is a display specimen; it should not be ground, drilled or used to prepare drinking-water infusions. Routine care should avoid soaking, acids and abrasive rubbing. A damaged or powdering specimen should be set aside for supplier advice rather than repeatedly handled.

Other reasons to use padding

Howlite is soft, and feldspars can break along cleavage. An aggregate may contain components that wear differently, while a filled or coated surface can react to chemicals. A stone does not have to be the softest material in the box to deserve a separate pocket. Look at condition and treatment as well as hardness when choosing storage.

Create an appropriate collection

Keep the delicate specimens in labelled padded cells and handle them above a soft mat. Use ordinary indoor display away from damp, heat and intense sunlight. Let the inventory card carry the material facts rather than marking the stone itself with adhesive or ink. A mixed kit can include delicate materials successfully when its instructions explain the differences and its transport packaging prevents contact between samples.
