The safest routine for a mixed tumbled-stone collection is careful handling, dust removal with a clean soft cloth and storage that prevents stones from rubbing together. Choose additional cleaning only after checking the material, treatment and condition. One universal soaking ritual is a poor substitute for an item-specific care note.

Inspect before you clean
Check for loose grains, chips, surface-reaching cracks and signs of deterioration. Remove grit with a very soft brush before wiping; trapped particles can scratch softer material. Support a pebble over a padded surface rather than above a hard sink. Stop if a surface flakes, powders or sheds fragments. Photograph a new problem and ask the supplier about the material and any coating before applying liquids.
Keep delicate materials separate
Fluorite, howlite and malachite need particular protection from abrasion. Feldspars such as moonstone and labradorite can break along cleavage even though they do not feel especially soft. Pyrite should stay dry. For dyed, filled or impregnated stock, follow its treatment-specific restrictions. Steam and ultrasonic cleaners are inappropriate default choices for a mixed bag whose identity and treatments are uncertain.

Store by contact risk
Use individual pockets or padded cells so that a harder quartz pebble cannot scrape a softer neighbour in transit. Store clean, dry specimens in a stable indoor location away from strong sunlight, heat and persistent damp. Keep labels with their compartments. A wooden tray used for display should be emptied before it is cleaned; stones and wood can need different care.
Keep use sensible
Do not put mineral samples into drinking water, food, baths or a mouth. Avoid grinding or drilling unfamiliar material. Keep small stones and loose packing away from children and pets. Clean hands before and after working with a collection, and wash them after touching a deteriorating specimen. Personal ritual can be practised without immersion: a quiet dry arrangement preserves both the labels and the mineral surfaces.
