Tumbled Stone Sizes, Weights and Quality Grades

Size, weight and grade are separate descriptions. A long flat pebble can weigh less than a compact dense one, and a bright polish does not make a stone a standardised AAA grade. Useful specifications tell you how a particular seller measures, sorts and describes the actual batch.

Read dimensions carefully

The longest dimension is often the easiest way to sort irregular tumbles. Ask whether a 20–30 mm band refers to length alone and whether very thin pieces are allowed. Three dimensions provide a better picture for a display recess. Measure the internal compartment as well as the stone: a pebble needs enough clearance to lift out without rubbing its neighbours. A picture without a dependable scale is a poor sizing guide.

Separate stone weight from parcel weight

A stated total may include the shell, wooden tray or shipping carton. Ask for net stone weight when comparing bulk offers and the packed weight when planning transport. A fixed count does not guarantee a fixed weight because density and shape vary. Do not infer an individual weight from a wide mixed-lot range. A useful invoice states the selling unit explicitly: piece, named pack or net weight.

Understand informal grades

Commercial labels such as A, AA and AAA are often seller-defined for tumbled material. Ask which visible characteristics the grade measures: colour coverage, polish, pattern, size consistency or freedom from open fractures. A grade cannot replace an identity statement. A heavily treated bright sample may be sorted into a higher visual grade than a paler untreated one, so treatment and appearance must be discussed separately.

Write an acceptance description

For an organised set, specify the desired dimension band, comfortable edges, clear labels and no loose fragments. Accept normal pattern variation while identifying unacceptable chips or active surface deterioration. A proposed procurement range is useful for assembly planning but should not be published as measured stock. Record actual dimensions and tolerances after inspection, then check that the chosen packaging still protects the whole assortment.
