Jade Trade Names on Pyramids: Questions About Green, Blue, Yellow and Black

Green jade, blue jade, yellow jade and black jade are attractive retail phrases, but they do not by themselves identify a carving. Jade naming requires attention to the actual material, and several commercial jade names are used for other minerals or rocks. Ask for the identity first, then discuss colour and finish.

Green: the most familiar trap

A green pyramid can be made from identified jade material, aventurine quartz, serpentine, dyed quartzite or another decorative stone. Neither a smooth polish nor a cool feel settles the distinction. A seller should state the identified body rather than borrowing jade’s reputation from colour. If a report is offered, match it to the actual carving.

Blue, yellow and black need the same discipline

Unusual colour does not automatically prove a fake, and familiar colour does not prove jade. GIA notes that rare blue jadeite exists while many geographic or colour-based jade names refer to other materials. That does not establish the identity of any offered blue pyramid. Each actual body and any dye, impregnation or coating need their own evidence.

Treatment and construction

Ask separately about identification, natural colour, dyeing, impregnation and whether the object is one piece or assembled. A letter such as A, B or C is a trade shorthand that needs explanation in the report’s own terms. Do not assume a generic certificate or a supplier’s assurance covers all treatment possibilities.

Care while identity is unknown

Avoid acids, solvents, steam and destructive scratch tests. Use gentle dry dusting until the body and treatment are clear. Different materials sold as jade can have different durability and moisture behaviour. A finished carving should not be subjected to a home acid test in order to decide which care guide applies.

Questions before a purchase

Can colour-based jade categories be indexed immediately? Identity evidence and a meaningful offer range should come first. Does natural green guarantee untreated jade? No. Can a seller rename a verified non-jade carving? Yes: use the identified material and explain the trade name honestly rather than preserving a misleading category.
