Black tourmaline, black obsidian and shungite can look similar in a thumbnail while representing very different bodies. Tourmaline is a mineral material, obsidian is volcanic glass and shungite trade material is carbon-bearing rock. Compare texture, construction and disclosed identity rather than assigning one common meaning to every black pyramid.
Tourmaline: seams and intergrowth
A tourmaline carving can show mineral seams or contrasting areas. Ask whether it is one carved piece, repaired or filled. Surface polish does not answer that question. Inspect the apex and the base where a seam reaches an edge. A rough-material photograph is not a condition report for the finished carving.
Obsidian: glassy polish and edges
Obsidian can take a strong reflective finish. That appearance does not prove natural origin, since manufactured glass can look similar. Ask for accurate naming and inspect for small chips under side light. A broken obsidian edge can be sharp, so display and packing need particular care around impact.
Shungite: composition and claims
A black shungite carving does not carry a known carbon percentage by appearance alone. Ask what evidence supports any grade or composition claim and whether binder or coating is present. Conductivity does not demonstrate room-wide electromagnetic protection. A decorative object is also not automatically suitable for treating drinking water.
