Navagraha traditions associate nine grahas with gemstones, while many affordable decorative sets use different coloured materials. A useful reference must show that difference openly. A tumbled colour proxy should never be sold as if it were a ruby, pearl, coral or another classical gem that is absent from the box.

Read the traditional chart
A familiar correspondence lists Sun–ruby, Moon–pearl, Mars–red coral, Mercury–emerald, Jupiter–yellow sapphire, Venus–diamond, Saturn–blue sapphire, Rahu–hessonite and Ketu–cat’s-eye chrysoberyl. This is a traditional reference, not a statement of scientifically demonstrated effects. Regional practice and secondary-stone traditions need their own attribution. Drik Panchang is one accessible reference for the commonly used primary chart.
Identify any display proxies
An original teaching design may use carnelian, moonstone, red jasper, green aventurine, yellow jasper, clear quartz, sodalite, smoky quartz and tiger eye as clearly named colour samples. These are display analogues chosen for the lesson, not a classical Navaratna set and not universally accepted astrological substitutes. Each card should show both the traditional gem name and the actual sample identity.

Keep position and purpose explicit
A three-by-three board can be used to organise a lesson, with its orientation and centre stated on the supplied guide. The arrangement should be described as that kit’s documented teaching layout. A fixed board does not prove that every tradition uses the same geometry. Do not turn a decorative reference set into a personal prescription to wear or install several gemstones together.
Check the physical offer
Count nine actual samples and read the names before buying. A report for one expensive gem cannot authenticate unrelated proxies. Keep treatment notes with each specimen, use padded cells and protect feldspars from knocks. The value of a reference kit lies in an honest chart, clear labels and a consistent inventory, rather than a promise of planetary correction or guaranteed personal outcomes.
