The phrase five elements can refer to different traditional classification systems. A gemstone display should name the system being discussed and explain how its chosen stones relate to it. There is no single mineralogical five-element set that can be presented as universally authoritative.

Keep Indian and Chinese systems distinct
An Indian five-element discussion commonly uses earth, water, fire, air and space. Chinese wuxing uses wood, fire, earth, metal and water and is often translated as five phases. These are different conceptual frameworks. A product should not merge their names or present a Chinese phase chart as an Indian Vastu rule. The interpretation belongs in a qualified cultural explanation, not in a mineral specification.
Label modern colour analogies
A teaching display might pair red jasper with Earth, amazonite with Water, carnelian with Fire, howlite with Air and clear quartz with Space. Those are explicitly modern display choices, not proof that each mineral is prescribed by an ancient text. An honest legend records both columns: the chosen symbolic label and the actual material. Changing a sample requires changing the legend.

Make the lesson physically clear
Five pockets or five labelled positions can be more useful than a mixed bowl. Use an inventory card, a stable surface and a diagram that shows the reading order. If another tradition is being compared, print it as a separate chart with a clear title. Avoid drawings that imply physical elements are being emitted, measured or corrected by the stones.
Choose with realistic expectations
Compare the materials, count, container and printed explanation. Treat traditional correspondences as a framework for reflection or discussion, not a chemical classification or medical method. Keep soft howlite padded and protect amazonite from knocks. A small factual display can support a respectful conversation while leaving uncertainty and differences between traditions visible.
