Moonstone, Labradorite and Sunstone Explained

Moonstone, labradorite and sunstone belong to the feldspar world but display different optical effects. The best comparison is a moving view under a simple light, backed by accurate material naming. A dramatic photograph captures one favourable angle and should not be read as a promise that every face will show the same effect.

Understand the effect being described

Moonstone is associated with a floating soft sheen called adularescence. Labradorite can show broad angle-dependent colour flashes, while sunstone can contain reflective inclusions that produce aventurescence. These descriptions help explain what to look for; they do not identify every unknown pebble. The mineral species and the commercial variety name should be recorded separately whenever that information is available.

Read rainbow moonstone carefully

Rainbow moonstone is commonly a trade name for material in the labradorite range. A collection comparing moonstone and labradorite should not silently use the same material under two labels. Ask whether the intended moonstone is an orthoclase-albite intergrowth and how the supplier identifies it. If the exact identity remains unknown, keep that uncertainty visible rather than claiming a scientifically complete three-mineral comparison.

Do not promise a uniform flash

The orientation of internal structures and inclusions affects the view. A pebble can show a strong patch on one side and an ordinary grey or cream surface elsewhere. Ask for a short movement video or several angles of actual stock where the effect is central to the purchase. Sunstone does not automatically mean Oregon origin or copper-bearing material, and glittering manufactured goldstone is a separate product.

Protect cleavage-prone specimens

Feldspar hardness is not the same as resistance to impact. Use padded compartments and avoid dropping a polished pebble onto a hard tabletop. Steam, ultrasonic cleaning and sudden heat are poor default choices. In a demonstration, let one person handle a sample over a cloth and return it to its labelled cell before passing another. This preserves both the surface and the identity record.
